Pollution levels are increasing at an alarming rate, currently contributing to about 11.65% of deaths globally. Climate phenomena like wildfires have made issues like air quality more visible than ever.

On the other hand, one in seven people worldwide suffers from pollen allergy, and the sensitization rate to pollen allergens is around 40%.

However, something that often goes unnoticed is that pollution produces 3x times the amount of histamine in the body compared to allergies alone. At this rate, by 2050, 50% of people will suffer some kind of allergy.

This was the premise of Ambee’s collaboration with Sanofi—a pharmaceutical giant, and the beginning of Ambee’s Smart HeathNav tech.

In this blog, we’ll take you through Smart HealthNav and how it helped Sanofi build Allegra Airways, leading to a global interest in this groundbreaking platform.

How Was The Smart HealthNav Technology Born?

During Climate Week NYC 2023, Sanofi partnered with Ambee to beta-launch Allegra Airways, their new technology for New York City. Their intention was to develop cutting-edge technology that offered real-time navigation options with reduced exposure to air and pollen pollutants.

The technology behind Allegra Airways was born around the same time to aid Sanofi in developing it. Ambee's real-time AQ and pollen API played a major role in enhancing the Allegra Airways platform, both in terms of information and user experience.

However, this was not all that was built. The product that Ambee put forth for Sanofi consisted of more in-depth features and information for the users, which will most likely set a standard for smart navigation apps in the future.

What Was the Role of Smart HealthNav in Building Allegra Airways?

The basics of the platform were built using Ambee’s Smart HealthNav technology—from data to the intricate features of the product. Ambee’s strength has always been accurate and reliable datasets that can be integrated into any platform, and Airways is now a testament to that.

While showing information on pollen and AQ, Allegra Airways also shows the overlap of air pollution and pollen along selected routes, delivering invaluable information to users. This information was showcased via a GPS-like AQ/pollen tracker and an interactive heatmap.

Below are the product's technical features. They are divided into two stages—the pilot and the official launch. Allegra Airways included the following data information for both stages:

  • Datasets: Pollen and air quality
  • Data coverage
    • Pilot: New York for the pilot
    • Official launch: Pan-U.S. for the official launch
  • Spatial resolution: 5 sq km
  • Temporal resolution: Hourly updates
  • Data timeline:
    •  Pilot: Real-time data
    •  Official launch: Real-time data, 24 hours of forecast data, and 48 hours of historical data
  • Granularity: Zip-code level
  • Route distance: 30 miles/48.28 km

Here’s a detailed list of all the stations and satellite sources from which we source data for our APIs.

With Ambee’s robust technology and record-time execution, the Allegra team was able to take the platform live at Climate Week NYC 2023 with the following features.

Features for the pilot

In our latest case study, read about how Ambee helped Sanofi develop Allegra Airways and the pilot's outcome.

After the success of the pilot, Sanofi gave the green light for Allegra Airways to be launched across the U.S. Moving forward from the beta version of the platform, the upgraded product for the official launch included:

Features for the Pan-U.S. launch

The key differentiators, you ask?

Forecasted routes: This feature allows users to check their routes ahead of time—up to 24 hours—to help increase their safety and make travel plans based on these routes.

The intersection of pollen and AQ on heatmaps: The heatmap showcases the interaction between pollen and AQ along the selected routed for the users. This feature, unlike the traditional AQ or pollen maps, helps people suffering from allergies to a greater degree by taking the average exposure into consideration while making plans.

What Can You Do With Smart HealthNav Technology?

With rising pollution and pollen levels, allergies are rising exponentially. Such innovation helps the public monitor or track their safe air routes and maintain their health and fitness. These environmental datasets empower users with real-time information that can help them make informed decisions and enjoy a better quality of life.

Some of the ways in which users can make the most of this technology are:

1. Allergy-Friendly Commuting: Individuals with allergies often struggle with their daily commutes, especially in urban areas with high pollution and pollen levels. Allegra Airways can suggest alternate routes with cleaner air, reducing exposure to allergens and pollutants during travel.

2. Outdoor Activities Planning: People who enjoy outdoor activities such as jogging, cycling, or picnics can use Allegra Airways to plan routes that minimize exposure to pollen and pollution. This can help them enjoy their activities without suffering from allergy symptoms or respiratory issues.

3. Health-conscious Navigating: Health-conscious individuals, including those with respiratory conditions like asthma, can benefit from using Allegra Airways to navigate through the city. By choosing routes with better air quality, they can reduce the risk of triggering respiratory problems and improve their overall well-being.

"Revolutionizing commute, this app offers real-time routes based on air quality and pollen data. With customizable start times and allergy-friendly navigation, it's a must-have for health-conscious travelers. The intuitive heat maps provide invaluable insights, ensuring healthy journeys every time."
